Our Directors.

We are truly blessed to have an incredible director team for the Canfield Band program.  These talented musicians and leaders put time, energy, and dedication into making our program great.  Get to know a little bit more about the team below.

Kyle O’Donnell

Mr. O’Donnell earned his Bachelor of Music Education from the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University in 2018. After his college graduation, Mr. O’Donnell was hired at Western Reserve Local Schools in Berlin Center, Ohio, where he spent three years as the band director. Additionally, Mr. O’Donnell was in charge of the pep band and the jazz band while at Western Reserve. While this is his first year as the band director at Canfield High School, Mr. O’Donnell chose to do his student teaching within the Canfield music department back in the fall of 2018. When not in the classroom, Mr. O’Donnell maintains a consistent performing and recording schedule with various local and national artists. Most notably, Mr. O’Donnell performs and tours with Youngstown-based rock band “The Vindys” as their lead trumpet player. Mr. O’Donnell has been fortunate enough to play all over the country, including in New York City, Los Angeles, Nashville, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington D.C. and Pittsburgh. If he’s not teaching or performing, Mr. O’Donnell enjoys travelling the world with his wife Mary, who is currently a college professor, and was a 2009 graduate of Canfield High School.

Mr. Volenik received his Bachelor of Music Education from the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University. He received his Masters degree from the College of Mount St. Joseph. He has been director of Bands at Canfield Village Middle School for over twenty-five years. He has served as chairman of OMEA District V Adjudicated Events, both Solo and Ensemble and Large Group, as well as chairman of the District V Middle School Honors Band as part of their annual conference. He is also active as an adjudicator for Solo and Ensemble events. Mr. Volenik has served as limited service faculty at Y.S.U. Mr. Volenik was awarded the Outstanding Arts Teacher Award in Music from the Youngstown Area Arts Council in 1998-1999. In May 2000, he became a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar. Mr. Volenik is on staff at the Wooster Music Camp held each July at the College of Wooster. He is a member of Phi Beta Mu and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He continues to perform professionally as a freelance saxophonist in the Cleveland/Youngstown area.  Mr. Volenik resides in Canfield with his wife, Laura, and their daughter Lindsay.


Michael M. Fay

Mr. Fay has earned his Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, and a Master of Music in tuba performance from Arizona State University. Michael is currently a candidate in the Doctoral of Musical Arts program at Arizona State University in tuba performance. Michael is in his second year of teaching music within the Canfield Local Schools.  He is currently assigned to C.H. Campbell Elementary School, and is an assistant with fifth and sixth grade bands at CVMS.  In addition, Mr. Fay is an assistant with the Cardinal Pride Marching Band, and is an Adjunct Professor for Kent State University.  Mr. Fay has found many avenues for teaching music throughout his career. He has held positions at Northern Arizona University as a Senior Lecturer of Music, as well as, Arizona State University as a Graduate Teaching  Assistant.  In addition, Mr. Fay has taught band, choir and general music at various public schools in Arizona and Ohio.  Recently, Michael has been Music Director at Crestview High School and Middle School in Columbiana, Ohio, where he taught band, choir, general music, and middle college courses. His professional experience includes performing with groups such as the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Cincinnati Ballet, Phoenix Symphony, Arizona Opera, Richmond (Indiana) Symphony Orchestra, Northern Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, Elden Brass Quintet, Mesa Symphony, and the Tempe Symphony.  He has also performed with the Tempe Symphonic Winds, Symphony of the West Valley, Southwest Brass Quintet, Salt River Brass Band, as well as numerous chamber and solo engagements throughout the United States and Canada. Mr. Fay has recorded new works for band for Carl Fisher Music Publisher.  In addition, Michael has recorded with the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Wind Symphony and Philharmonia Orchestra, Southwest Brass Quintet, and the Salt River Brass Band.  He has also served as assistant producer for The Breathing Gym and Band Blastoff music education videos. Michael resides in Canfield, Ohio with his wife Holly and their two sons, Jake and Aidan.
