Band Directors

Mr. Mike Kelly, Mr. Jim Volenik and Mr. Marc Pupino direct the bands that bring the sounds of music to Canfield. 

Michael L. Kelly, Jr.

Mr. Kelly is in his sixth year as Director of Bands at Canfield High School. His teaching responsibilities include directing the “Cardinal Pride” marching and pep bands, concert and symphonic bands, as well as music theory.

Previous to his appointment at Canfield, Mr. Kelly taught instrumental, vocal, and general music for eight years within the James A. Garfield Local Schools in Garrettsville, Ohio. Mr. Kelly received his Master of Music in Performance-Instrumental Conducting and a Bachelor of Music Education from The Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University.

Mr. Kelly is an active member in the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) serving as District VI President-Elect, local chair for Middle and Junior High School Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event(s), and as an OMEA adjudicator. Mr. Kelly resides in Bristolville with his beautiful wife, Diana, their son, Ethan Michael, and daughter Riley.

James Volenik

Mr. Volenik received his Bachelor of Music Education from the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University. He received his Masters degree from the College of Mount St. Joseph. He has been director of Bands at Canfield Village Middle School for over twenty-five years. 

He has served as chairman of OMEA District V Adjudicated Events, both Solo and Ensemble and Large Group, as well as chairman of the District V Middle School Honors Band as part of their annual conference. He is also active as an adjudicator for Solo and Ensemble events. Mr. Volenik has served as limited service faculty at Y.S.U.

Mr. Volenik was awarded the Outstanding Arts Teacher Award in Music from the Youngstown Area Arts Council in 1998-1999. In May 2000, he became a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar. Mr. Volenik is on staff at the Wooster Music Camp held each July at the College of Wooster. He is a member of Phi Beta Mu and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

He continues to perform professionally as a freelance saxophonist in the Cleveland/Youngstown area.  Mr. Volenik resides in Canfield with his wife, Laura, and their daughter Lindsay. His daughter Tracy is Group Event Assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers.  

Marc S. Pupino

Mr. Pupino just completed his 17th year teaching.  His teaching responsibilities include directing the Canfield Village Middle School 7th and 8th Grade Concert Band, 5th and 6th Grade Band, 8th Grade Music Appreciation and Assistant Band Director at Canfield High School. 

Prior to his appointment in Canfield, Mr. Pupino was the Director of Bands at Austintown Frank Ohl Middle School in Austintown from 2002-2007, and was the Director of Bands in the East Palestine School District from 1994-2002.  Mr. Pupino received his Bachelor of Music Education from the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University, and his Masters in Educational Administration from Ashland University. 

Mr. Pupino is a member of the Ohio Music Education Association and is a judge for Solo and Ensemble all over the state.  Mr. Pupino plays professionally for the Warren W. D. Packard Band as Assistant Principal Trumpet and is also the leader of the dance band Ovation.  Mr. Pupino resides in Canfield with his two daughters.
